Toyota's Avalon is available in four different models for 2008, ranging from comfortable and reasonably well-appointed to luxurious and technology-laden. Across the line, Avalons are powered by a 3.5L V6 engine with Dual VVT-i variable valve timing, making 268 horsepower and 248 lb-ft. This engine is paired with a new six-speed automatic transmission that provides improved performance and has a manual shift feature. As such, the Avalon can reach 60 mph in 7.7 seconds yet carries EPA fuel economy ratings of 19 mpg city, 28 highway.
High-intensity discharge (HID) headlamps are standard on Touring and Limited models, and the Limited comes with LED turn signals and puddle lamps. All Avalons come with dual exhaust outlets.
The Touring grade is configured differently as it has a sportier emphasis, including a tighter suspension, leather trimmed seats, a power front passenger seat, and aluminum scuff plates. XL models are equipped with most common conveniences, while XLS models include a standard six-disc CD changer, power moonroof, and an anti-theft system.
The Limited model serves as the technology flagship and includes a power rear sunshade, memory driver's seat, automatic rain-sensing wipers, auto-leveling HID headlamps, and a Smart Key system that is able to automatically turn on the interior lighting and unlock the doors.
Top options on the Avalon include a navigation system, dynamic laser cruise control, a remote engine starter, and a 12-speaker, 360-watt JBL Synthesis sound system with six-disc CD changer and Bluetooth connectivity.
Front side air bags and side-curtain bags that cover front and rear outboard passengers are standard across the line, as is Toyota's VSC electronic stability control and anti-lock brakes with brake assist.

A six-speed automatic transmission is new on the Toyota Avalon for 2008, replacing the previous five-speed, and the brake system has been revised to include larger rear discs and new aluminum rear calipers.
Standard equipment has been expanded. All models now include a multi-information display, and added chrome interior trim. Touring and XLS models get new chrome door handles and a new wheel design, while a four-way power seat is now standard on the XL. An eight-way power seat is newly optional on the XLS. XLS and Limited models get new dark woodgrain and chrome trim and power lumbar adjustment; Limited models have a new sunshade that automatically deploys when shifting from reverse to drive.
Also, the top JBL Synthesis sound system gains Bluetooth connectivity for 2008.
The 2008 Avalon is Toyota's largest, most luxurious sedan, with generous space for five adults, plus a very soft ride and quiet interior, to compete with large sedans like the Buick Lucerne and Ford Taurus. Plus, the Limited model functions as Toyota's flagship sedan, with some top-tech features that are otherwise found only on Lexus-brand vehicles.
